Alphabet's Google has warned certain employees holding U.S. visas to avoid international travel due to extensive delays at U.S. embassies and consulates, as per a report by Business Insider. This alert was communicated in an internal email from Google's outside counsel, BAL Immigration Law, dated Thursday.
The email indicated that visa stamping processes could take as long as 12 months in some embassies, suggesting that international travel in such circumstances may lead to extended periods outside the U.S., potentially disrupting work and personal commitments.
This advisory arrives in the context of heightened scrutiny regarding the H-1B visa program, frequently utilized by tech giants like Google to recruit skilled talent from countries such as India and China. Earlier this year, the U.S. government increased visa application fees and instituted stricter vetting protocols, including social media account reviews for applicants.
In September, Alphabet had previously recommended that its staff avoid overseas travel if they hold H-1B visas. The current communication reflects escalating concerns over visa processing delays that might interfere with work routines and projects for employees in essential positions.
Google has not provided a public response to inquiries for comment. The advice emphasizes the difficulties tech companies face in managing global talent amid complex immigration regulations and slow processes. Employees planning on traveling are urged to assess the risks thoroughly and seek guidance from legal or immigration specialists before departing the country.
