Dubai Celebrates Emirati Heritage with the Launch of Season of Wulfa

Post by : Bianca Haleem

His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Deputy Prime Minister of the UAE, has inaugurated the Season of Wulfa, a fresh cultural initiative aimed at honoring Emirati traditions and community spirit.

This initiative shines a spotlight on Dubai’s rich cultural heritage while reinforcing social ties and asserting the emirate's role as a premier global hub for tolerance and respect among diverse cultures. Under the leadership of Her Highness Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairperson of the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority, the Season of Wulfa promises a variety of cultural and community-centric activities throughout its duration.

A Celebration of Heritage and Spirituality

Deeply interwoven with spiritual values and community traditions, the Season of Wulfa will commence on Hag Al Leila, the 15th of Sha‘ban, extending throughout Ramadan and culminating in the celebrations of Eid Al-Fitr and Eid Al-Adha.

These festivities encapsulate significant moments in the UAE’s cultural and spiritual landscape, uniting them under a single initiative aimed at celebrating time-honored traditions that have shaped Emirati society.

Built on three foundational pillars—reflection, connection, and blessing—this initiative will express rich customs and practices that carry profound social and spiritual significance, enhancing community harmony and relationships.

Fostering Cultural Identity and Belonging

The initiative emphasizes the need to maintain cherished customs while adapting them to resonate with contemporary society. It aims to elevate awareness about cultural heritage, reinforce community belonging, and promote programs that underscore culture's role in a compassionate society.

A Collaborative Citywide Festivity

Over 50 initiatives and events will take place at more than 30 venues across Dubai, including neighborhoods, markets, and major cultural sites. This collaborative effort involves government institutions, the private sector, and local residents.

Together, these initiatives will cultivate a vibrant cultural platform that doesn’t just welcome citizens and residents but also entices visitors worldwide, fostering cultural exchange while commemorating shared human values.

Emphasis on Values from Sheikh Hamdan

Sheikh Hamdan highlighted the role of creative initiatives that strengthen community bonds and values.

“This initiative encapsulates the UAE’s communal spirit while safeguarding our cultural legacy,” he stated. “It enhances belonging and harmony, fosters cultural links, and solidifies the cohesive spirit essential for a strong society. Our aim is to enrich personal and social connections.”

He emphasized that the strength of a society lies in its capacity to preserve its cultural legacy and transfer values to future generations in a manner that fits contemporary times. The Season of Wulfa is designed to blend past traditions with present experiences, inspiring awareness and commitment to protecting cultural identity.

Sheikha Latifa: Uniting Values and Human Connection

Her Highness Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed stated that the events within the Season of Wulfa—Hag Al Leila, Ramadan, and the two Eids—are rooted in humanitarian values promoting positive interactions.

She elaborated that the season aims to create shared moments that truly reflect the essence of Emirati culture by seamlessly blending rich heritage with modern creative experiences.

“Dubai has consistently prioritized cultural and social heritage,” she remarked. “This heritage embodies our shared history and serves as the cornerstone for our future developments. Through the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai exemplifies cultural harmony and welcomes nearly 200 nationalities as part of its narrative.”

She further asserted that the Season of Wulfa fortifies Dubai’s reputation as a global benchmark for coexistence and harmony. Its three pillars—reflection, connection, and blessing—truly encapsulate the essence of human values, cultural richness, and authentic traditions.

Inspiration for Generations to Come

The season will also provide a platform for artists and innovators to share their creative expressions that resonate with universal themes of tolerance and understanding. It plans to feature innovative, immersive cultural experiences that weave together heritage, community values, and modern lifestyles anchored in local traditions.

These experiences encapsulate the true essence of Wulfa—signifying community, kinship, and closeness—designed to fortify social connections while engaging future generations with Emirati heritage.

The Meaning of ‘Wulfa’

The term Wulfa derives from the classical Arabic word ‘Ulfa, signifying warmth and familiarity. In the UAE and various regions of the Arab world, Wulfa is employed to convey closeness, comfort, and strong connections among individuals—epitomizing the mission and affection behind this new seasonal initiative.

The unveiling of the Season of Wulfa marks a significant addition to Dubai’s cultural calendar, celebrating its historical roots while forging connections between individuals, communities, and cultures.
