Hamilton Mall Shooting: Court Authorizes Release of Teen Suspect's Identity

Post by : Shweta

Hamilton police have been granted permission by the court to publicly disclose the identity of a teenage individual implicated in a deadly shooting at Jackson Square. This tragic event, which occurred on Friday evening, claimed the life of 16-year-old Nabil Askafe and is regarded by authorities as a targeted incident.

Investigators have identified the suspect as a 14-year-old male from Hamilton, who is facing charges of second-degree murder. Due to protections for minors, police needed judicial clearance to share details about the suspect. This court order will remain in effect until April 29, during which police are focused on apprehending him.

The shooting unfolded around 5 p.m. inside the bustling shopping area, stemming from a confrontation between the victim and two other males. Investigators believe one suspect was carrying a firearm larger than a standard handgun, which was used during the incident, while the second individual is thought to be unarmed. Authorities are calling for that individual to come forward and assist with the case.

Emergency services responded swiftly to the scene, with reports indicating that the victim managed to move a short distance before collapsing. He was later found and pronounced dead, causing profound sorrow within the community, with officials expressing condolences for the loss experienced by the victim's family.

Detective Robert Di Ianni has made a direct appeal to the suspect to seek legal representation and turn himself in to authorities. To build the case, investigators are reviewing surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses to clarify the details of the shooting incident.

In the wake of the incident, the shopping center was temporarily cleared but has since resumed operations after the area was deemed secure. Law enforcement reports that the investigation is ongoing, and updates will follow as new information arises.
