Hassyan Desalination Plant by DEWA Surges Toward 90% Completion

Post by : Bianca Haleem

HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Managing Director and CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), recently inspected the first phase of the Hassyan seawater desalination plant, which is now around 90% complete. Full project completion is anticipated in the first quarter of 2027.

This landmark desalination facility, with a total investment of AED 3.377 billion, is recognized as one of the largest seawater reverse-osmosis (RO) plants in the world. It signifies DEWA’s first Independent Water Producer (IWP) endeavor and is a notable step forward for Dubai’s water infrastructure.

Al Tayer was joined by notable figures such as Mohammad Abunayyan, Chairman of ACWA Power; Nasser Lootah, Executive Vice President of Generation; Hussain Lootah, Executive Vice President of Transmission Power; and Waleed bin Salman, Executive Vice President of Business Development and Excellence at DEWA, along with senior board members and engineers from Hassyan Water Company A.

During the visit, Al Tayer emphasized that this project is a reflection of the vision and directives of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. It aims to develop a sophisticated, integrated energy and water infrastructure to cater to Dubai's rapid growth and increased water demand while adhering to the UAE’s water security and sustainable development objectives.

Officials from Hassyan Water Company A presented detailed outlines of the project's vital role in enhancing Dubai's smart desalinated water ecosystem and the Integrated Water Resources Management Strategy 2030.

Al Tayer also reinforced DEWA’s commitment to employing energy-efficient RO desalination technologies, which are significantly more energy-saving than conventional multi-stage distillation methods. Looking to the future, DEWA plans to boost its desalination capabilities by an additional 240 million imperial gallons per day by 2030, utilizing seawater reverse-osmosis technology. Furthermore, DEWA intends to ensure that 100% of desalinated water production is supported by a mix of clean energy sources and waste heat, underscoring its dedication to sustainability.
