At least 23 people have died in Mexico this week due to heavy rains, according to local authorities. The intense rainfall affected 31 of 32 states, with the worst-hit regions being Veracruz, Queretaro, Hidalgo, and San Luis Potosi.
State-Wise Impact
In Hidalgo state, authorities reported 16 deaths and around 1,000 homes affected. Puebla state recorded five deaths, with 11 people still missing. Veracruz reported the death of a minor, while a police officer died in Queretaro during rescue operations. The heavy rains caused widespread disruption across the country.
Causes Of Damage
The affected areas experienced landslides, overflowing rivers, and road collapses, as explained by Laura Velazquez, national coordinator for civil defense. Infrastructure and homes suffered significant damage, leaving many residents displaced and in urgent need of assistance.
Government Response
President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed that local authorities are working to support residents, reopen roads, and restore electricity. She emphasized the importance of rapid relief efforts for the safety and well-being of affected communities. Shelters have been opened for those displaced from their homes.
Military Deployment And Relief Efforts
To assist in the response, over 5,400 troops have been deployed across the affected areas. The military is helping distribute aid, rescue equipment, and vehicles, ensuring that communities receive essential supplies and support in the aftermath of the floods.
Impact Of Tropical Storm Raymond
Tropical Storm Raymond, currently off Mexico’s Pacific coast, has added to the heavy rainfall as it moves north. Damage from the storm has been reported in Chiapas, Guerrero, Oaxaca, and Michoacan states. The storm is expected to hit southern Baja California over the weekend, increasing the risk of further flooding.
Record Rainfall In Mexico City
Mexico has experienced particularly heavy rains throughout 2025, with Mexico City setting a rainfall record. The extreme weather has intensified the flooding crisis and challenged emergency response teams in multiple states.
Ongoing Safety Measures
Authorities continue to monitor rivers and landslide-prone areas, advise residents to move to higher ground if necessary, and coordinate relief operations. Public officials urge people to stay informed, follow safety instructions, and avoid unsafe areas until conditions improve.
The heavy rains and flooding have caused loss of life, displacement, and infrastructure damage across Mexico. Coordinated efforts from the government, military, and local authorities aim to restore normalcy, deliver aid, and protect residents as the country faces continued rainfall from Tropical Storm Raymond.
