Hooghly Durga Pandal Sparks Outrage Over Air India Crash

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

During this year’s Durga Puja in Hooghly district, West Bengal, a pandal drew significant public criticism for its depiction of the Air India plane crash. The installation aimed to honor the victims and rescue workers of the June 12 Air India tragedy but ended up sparking outrage on social media and among locals.

Pandal Depiction of Tragedy

The pandal recreated a broken aircraft amid debris and flames, mimicking the June 12 crash of a London-bound Air India flight that hit the BJ Medical College hostel in Ahmedabad. The disaster claimed 260 lives, including 241 passengers and crew, and 19 people on the ground. Organizers intended the display as a tribute to victims and first responders, but the graphic imagery shocked many viewers.

Public Reaction and Social Media Outcry

Despite the organizers’ explanation of respect for the victims, social media users criticized the choice of theme. Many called the display “insensitive” and “shameful,” questioning how such a theme was approved for a religious festival. Comments highlighted that the pandal could cause distress to the victims’ families rather than serve as a tribute.

Ethical Debate on Real-Life Tragedies

The incident has reignited debates about the ethics of turning real-life tragedies into festival displays. A similar, less-publicized pandal in Nagpur recreated the Air India crash but drew minimal response. The Hooghly display, however, sparked wider discussion on the responsibilities of festival organizers in portraying sensitive subjects.

Calls for Sensitivity in Festival Planning

Locals and observers have urged planners to be more considerate in choosing themes for cultural events. While honoring victims is important, the Hooghly controversy demonstrates that depictions should avoid causing emotional distress to families affected by tragedies.

Impact on Public Perception

The controversy has not only drawn national attention but also highlighted how cultural events intersect with social responsibility. The Hooghly Durga Puja pandal now serves as a cautionary example, prompting festival organizers across the country to reconsider the line between tribute and insensitivity.

As discussions continue, many hope that future festival themes will focus on celebrating culture and tradition without evoking painful memories of real-life disasters. Organizers are being urged to balance creativity with empathy to maintain public trust and respect.
