Hyderabad Authorities Remove Nigerian National for Visa Violations

Post by : Bianca Haleem

In a noteworthy enforcement initiative, authorities in Hyderabad have deported a Nigerian man who had been living in India without valid documentation for over ten years. This coordinated effort by the Hyderabad Narcotic Enforcement Wing (H-NEW) and the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) highlights the government's determination to eliminate illegal foreign residency and its associated criminal undertakings.

The individual, 43-year-old Johnkennedy Chukwuemeka Okoro from Imo State, Nigeria, entered India in 2012 on a business visa. Throughout his stay, he migrated among various cities including Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad, with law enforcement confirming that both his passport and visa were long expired. Okoro reportedly utilized several aliases—such as ‘Hopy Cup’ and ‘Jeksa’—as he allegedly became involved in local networks that could be tied to drug trafficking.

Acting based on reliable intelligence, H-NEW located Okoro within the Asif Nagar region of Hyderabad. Even though no illegal substances were found during the arrest, authorities expressed concern over his extended illegal residency and suspected links to criminal activities, which pose a significant risk to community safety. After confirming his identity and securing the requisite travel documents, he was sent back to Nigeria.

The H-NEW, established to combat drug abuse and trafficking in Hyderabad, has intensified efforts to identify foreign nationals with expired visas suspected of partaking in illegal distribution networks. Since its formation, over 20 individuals have been deported for unlawful stays and criminal activities, many of which occurred this year.

Officials reiterated that local residents play a crucial role in ensuring the safety and security of the community. Citizens are encouraged to report any dubious activities or information concerning substance abuse and unauthorized foreign nationals. Furthermore, parents are advised to supervise their children’s associations to mitigate the risk of drug exposure.

This scenario underlines the ongoing challenge faced by Telangana authorities in effectively managing long-term foreign residents and intercepting those who may exploit loopholes for illegal gain.
