A court in Pakistan has sentenced former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his spouse, Bushra Bibi, to 17 years each in prison due to a new corruption scandal. This ruling compounds the existing legal troubles for Khan, who has been incarcerated since August 2023.
The charges involve the alleged misuse of high-value gifts received during his prime ministership. Prosecutors argue that Khan and his wife acquired luxury items, including expensive watches, from the state at significantly reduced prices, resulting in financial harm to the government. Both defendants have denied the allegations.
According to the verdict, the court sentenced the pair to 10 years for criminal breach of trust and an additional seven years under anti-corruption statutes, along with substantial fines.
Khan's attorney, Rana Mudassar Umer, criticized the ruling, claiming the decision was delivered without proper opportunity for the defense to present its case, calling it unjust and a breach of legal rights.
Information Minister Attaullah Tarar stated that Khan’s latest 17-year sentence will commence only after he completes a separate 14-year sentence stemming from a land corruption case, potentially keeping him incarcerated for an extended period.
This case centers around gifts reportedly bestowed upon Khan by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman during official diplomatic engagements. Under Pakistani law, such gifts are required to be returned to the state or acquired at their full market price. Prosecutors contend that Khan and Bibi violated these regulations by purchasing the items at discounted rates.
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party has condemned the verdict, asserting that the charges against Khan are politically motivated. Party representative Zulfi Bukhari remarked that the judicial system has been manipulated to persecute political opponents.
Khan has instructed his legal team to appeal the ruling in the Islamabad High Court, with his lawyers confirming that the appeal process will commence shortly.
This is not the initial case linked to state gifts; previous Toshakhana instances resulted in jail sentences for Khan and Bushra Bibi, though those were later overturned by higher courts. The Toshakhana is the governmental body managing gifts given to public officials.
Following the recent ruling, PTI announced intentions to organize protests across Punjab. The party also accused authorities of preventing family and legal visits to Khan recently, though officials deny these allegations, asserting compliance with prison protocols.
Imran Khan, once a celebrated cricketer, has emerged as one of Pakistan's pivotal political figures, remaining a contentious personality. As he navigates these legal challenges, the results will likely influence Pakistan's political landscape in the coming months.
