On a bright Friday at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Indian batters impressed with solid performances against West Indies. Even though the stadium remained empty for the second consecutive day, K.L. Rahul, Dhruv Jurel, and Ravindra Jadeja made the game exciting by scoring centuries and building a strong lead of 286 runs.
Rahul’s Long-Awaited Century
K.L. Rahul scored his second home Test century after nine years. Since his 199 against England in Chennai in December 2016, Rahul waited 3,211 days for another home hundred. He celebrated by flicking a shot through mid-wicket and removing his helmet in relief, though he was later caught at short extra-cover.
Jurel and Jadeja’s Partnership
Dhruv Jurel made his maiden Test century, while Ravindra Jadeja also scored big. The duo forged a 206-run partnership for the fifth wicket, helping India reach 448 for five at stumps. Their performance buried West Indies under a mountain of runs and showcased the depth of India’s batting lineup.
West Indies Struggle
West Indies’ young bowling attack lacked experience without Alzarri Joseph and Shamar Joseph. The bowlers could not trouble Rahul and Shubman Gill. Jayden Seales had one chance when Rahul edged a ball between the first slip and wicketkeeper, but the team failed to capitalize on it.
Tactical Moves
West Indies tried to slow down India with spinner Khary Pierre, switching sides to use the footmarks outside leg stump. This initially slowed the run flow, but India continued to dominate. Rahul attempted a reverse sweep, but was caught by Justin Greaves at first slip.
Jurel’s Tribute
Jurel dedicated his century to the Indian Army and paid tribute to his father, a retired Army officer. The young wicketkeeper-batter made the most of the opportunity in Rishabh Pant’s absence, showcasing his talent and composure at the crease.
Jadeja’s Century
Ravindra Jadeja also reached his century shortly after, becoming the second-highest scorer in Tests this year, surpassing Rahul. His performance further strengthened India’s position and added pressure on the West Indies team.
Rahul’s Celebration
K.L. Rahul, recently becoming a father, celebrated his 11th Test century with a personal gesture, kissing the badge, raising his bat, and showing a special sign to his newborn child. It was a heartfelt and emotional moment for the batter.
By the end of Day 2, India clearly dominated the Test match. The centuries by Rahul, Jurel, and Jadeja showed India’s strong batting form, putting them firmly in control and leaving West Indies struggling to make a comeback.
