India will switch focus to test cricket following their dramatic Asia Cup T20 triumph, as they take on a depleted West Indies team in the first of a two-test series starting Thursday. The opening match is set in Ahmedabad, with the second scheduled in Delhi from October 10.
Asia Cup Distraction Behind Them
India faced unusual circumstances after the Asia Cup, when the trophy was removed from the presentation ceremony due to their refusal to accept it from Asian Cricket Council chairman and Pakistan Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi. Despite this, the team aims to leave the distraction behind as they prepare for the longer format.
Mental Challenge of Switching Formats
Shubman Gill emphasized the mental adjustment needed when switching from T20 to test cricket. "It was a quick turnaround ... switching formats is more mental than it is about technique," he said. He added that fatigue affects batsmen more mentally, while bowlers face different challenges. Gill expressed readiness for the match, stating that his body feels fresh and prepared.
West Indies Squad Changes
The West Indies squad arrives with key absences, including injured fast bowlers Shamar Joseph and Alzarri Joseph. Shamar Joseph was the leading wicket-taker in their last test series, claiming 22 wickets during a 3-0 home defeat to Australia in June-July. The team also recently lost a T20 series against Nepal 2-1.
New Faces in the West Indies Lineup
Tagenarine Chanderpaul, son of former captain Shivnarine Chanderpaul, returns for his first test since January 2024, while Alick Athanaze has been recalled to strengthen the middle order against spin. Coach Darren Sammy highlighted that Chanderpaul’s return aims to improve the top-order performance, and Athanaze offers spin expertise.
Khary Pierre, with limited-overs experience, has been added as a second specialist spinner, while Gudakesh Motie has been rested. Sammy noted that playing in subcontinent conditions is always challenging and that the selected squad is built to remain competitive under these conditions.
India will play its first home test series since the 3-0 defeat by New Zealand last year. Shubman Gill stated that the team expects the matches to be demanding, promising “good, hard, grinding cricket” and stressing that there would be no shortcuts in approach.
The series marks an important opportunity for India to build momentum in the longer format, while the West Indies will look to transform their fortunes with returning players and strategic adjustments. Fans can expect intense competition as India aims to maintain dominance and the West Indies seek to recover from recent setbacks.
