Johannesburg, South Africa – On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi showcased India's ambitious agenda at the 20th G20 Summit in Johannesburg, aimed at addressing critical global issues including drug trafficking, health crises, and skill enhancement in Africa.
During the plenary session dedicated to inclusive and sustainable growth, Modi underscored the imperative to combat the rising threat of drug-related terrorism. “To tackle the menace of drug smuggling, particularly substances like fentanyl, India proposes a G20 initiative focused on Countering the Drug–Terror Nexus. Let us dismantle the abhorrent drug-terror economy,” he stated. This initiative seeks to merge financial, governmental, and security strategies to thwart networks that connect drugs and terrorism.
In healthcare, Modi suggested forming a G20 Global Healthcare Response Team designed to mobilize trained medical personnel from G20 countries for quick deployment in health crises or natural disasters. “Collectively, we are more resilient when facing health emergencies and natural disasters,” Modi asserted, emphasizing the need for global collaboration.
He also highlighted the importance of Africa's advancement for global progress, advocating for a G20-Africa Skills Multiplier Initiative that aims to certify one million trainers across the continent over the next ten years. “India has consistently been a partner to Africa. With the African Union becoming a permanent member of the G20 during India’s presidency, it's vital for us to invest in Africa’s development,” Modi remarked.
Furthermore, Modi revealed plans for a G20 Global Traditional Knowledge Repository that will gather and disseminate traditional knowledge from G20 nations to promote global health and wellness. “India possesses a wealth of traditional wisdom, and this repository will play a crucial role in sharing our collective insights,” he stated.
These initiatives reflect India’s concerted efforts to confront urgent global challenges while nurturing collaborative ties globally. The focus on drugs, health, and skills signifies a combination of immediate action and a progressive vision, demonstrating India’s proactive stance in influencing G20 objectives.
