The death toll from a school collapse in Indonesia has risen to at least 50 people, officials confirmed on Monday. The disaster occurred at the Al Khoziny Islamic boarding school in Sidoarjo, East Java, leaving the community in shock. Most of the victims were teenage boys attending the school when the tragedy struck.

Rescue Efforts and Debris Clearance

Rescuers worked tirelessly using excavators to remove debris from the collapsed structure. By late Sunday, about 80% of the rubble had been cleared. During this process, rescuers recovered bodies and body parts of the victims, highlighting the scale of the disaster.

Disaster Mitigation Agency Statement

Budi Irawan, deputy at the Indonesian disaster mitigation agency, stated that a total of 50 deaths have been confirmed based on the bodies recovered. He also mentioned that rescuers were continuing the search for 13 more individuals who were still believed to be trapped under the rubble.

Impact on Students and Community

The collapse of the school has devastated families and the local community. Hundreds of students were inside when the building gave way, and emergency responders had to work quickly to save anyone still alive. Authorities emphasized the importance of safety measures in schools to prevent such tragedies in the future.

Search Operations Continue

While the majority of the debris has been removed, search operations are ongoing. Rescue teams aim to locate any remaining victims and provide closure for their families. Officials are closely monitoring the situation to ensure all survivors are accounted for.

Government Response and Support

Local authorities have promised support for the affected families, including medical assistance and temporary housing for those displaced by the disaster. The government is also investigating the cause of the collapse to prevent similar incidents in the future.

International Attention and Sympathy

The tragedy has drawn attention from around the world, with many expressing sympathy for the victims and their families. The incident serves as a reminder of the need for strict building regulations and emergency preparedness in schools across the country.
