On September 19, a strong earthquake struck Central Papua province in Indonesia. The tremor was recorded at a magnitude of 6.1 by international monitors. It occurred in the early hours of the morning, waking residents from their sleep. Many people quickly left their homes in fear as the shaking grew stronger.
Epicenter and Location
The earthquake’s center was located about 28 kilometers south of Nabire town in Central Papua. The province lies on the western half of the large Pacific island that Indonesia shares with Papua New Guinea. The quake was shallow, which increased the intensity of the shaking felt by residents across the region.
Damage to Public Facilities
Authorities confirmed that several public facilities were damaged. Windows in an airport building were shattered, ceilings in a local regent’s office collapsed, and a bridge was left damaged. Power lines and telecommunication networks were also disrupted in some areas, leaving residents without communication for several hours.
Residents’ Experiences
Local people described how the earthquake caught them by surprise. A resident, 37-year-old Cicilia Mamman, said she was sleeping when the quake began. As the tremors grew stronger, she and her family rushed outside for safety. Many others in Nabire and surrounding areas also left their homes to gather in open spaces, fearing aftershocks.
Different Magnitude Reports
There were differences in earthquake readings. While international agencies reported the quake at 6.1 magnitude and a depth of 10 kilometers, Indonesian authorities measured it slightly stronger at 6.5 magnitude and deeper at 24 kilometers. Despite these differences, both confirmed it was a significant earthquake.
Aftershocks Recorded
Seismologists recorded around 50 aftershocks following the main quake. The strongest aftershock reached a magnitude of 5.1. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation, warning people to remain cautious as aftershocks can still cause damage to already weakened structures.
No Casualties Reported
Despite the damage to buildings and infrastructure, there have been no confirmed reports of deaths or serious injuries. Disaster management officials said this was partly because the quake struck early in the morning when fewer people were inside public facilities.
Indonesia’s Ring of Fire Location
Indonesia is located on the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, an area known for intense seismic activity. Tectonic plates constantly move and collide in this zone, making earthquakes and volcanic eruptions frequent. Central Papua and nearby regions have experienced many such tremors over the years.
Preparedness and Safety Measures
Authorities reminded the public to remain alert and prepared. They advised residents to stay outside during aftershocks, avoid weakened buildings, and listen to official safety announcements. Emergency response teams have been deployed to assess damage and restore services such as electricity and communication.
Community Resilience
Despite the fear and damage, the community in Central Papua showed resilience. Many families supported one another during the early morning hours, staying together in open spaces and helping neighbors in need. Local leaders praised the quick response of residents, which helped prevent injuries.
Broader Context of Seismic Risks
This earthquake once again highlights Indonesia’s vulnerability to natural disasters. As one of the most seismically active countries in the world, it faces regular earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions. Authorities continue to work on strengthening disaster preparedness, improving building safety standards, and increasing awareness among citizens.
