AI Robotics Revolution in South Korea

Post by : Shakul

South Korea is positioning itself as a pivotal hub for AI-driven robotics. The innovative startup RLWRLD has garnered global interest for its development of advanced AI systems that learn from skilled human professionals. By meticulously gathering movement patterns from hotel staff, warehouse workers, and retail employees, the company is crafting humanoid robots that can execute real-world tasks with remarkable accuracy.

At the Lotte Hotel in Seoul, seasoned workers don body cameras and motion sensors while carrying out everyday responsibilities. Demonstrating his expertise, employee David Park showcased his skills in meticulously preparing dining areas and folding banquet napkins. Each nuanced movement, from hand grips to body posture, is recorded and transformed into machine-readable data, enabling robots to replicate these specific techniques.

Furthermore, RLWRLD is extending its research to include logistics workers from CJ warehouses and staff at Lawson, a popular Japanese convenience store. The focus is on understanding how these workers manage package handling, product arrangement, and the care required for fragile items. Engineers assert these real-world activities are vital for the evolution of “physical AI,” robots designed to adapt, think, and react within real environments rather than merely handle repetitive tasks.

The goal is to create humanoid robots equipped with advanced five-fingered hands that can mimic human touch precisely. RLWRLD’s executives note that perfecting hand movements presents significant challenges. Engineers are employing virtual reality technology, motion-tracking gloves, and body sensors to capture intricate details including finger pressure and wrist movements.

The South Korean government supports the development of physical AI as a key industry for the future, investing substantially in robotics and AI to tackle challenges posed by an aging workforce and looming labor shortages. Recently, a comprehensive initiative was launched to digitize the skills and techniques of seasoned workers, creating valuable databases for training AI systems and industrial robots.

Major corporations are also gearing up for widespread robot integration. Hyundai Motor plans to implement humanoid robots designed by Boston Dynamics in factories worldwide starting in 2028, while Samsung Electronics aims to turn manufacturing sites into AI-centric hubs by 2030. Experts predict that such innovations could revolutionize sectors including manufacturing, hospitality, logistics, and healthcare.

Despite these advancements, concerns have emerged regarding the potential displacement of jobs. Labor unions are advocating for dialogues among businesses, governments, and workers to ensure that the progression of AI does not hinder employment opportunities.

But experts believe that human interaction will retain its significance across various fields. David Park from hospitality noted that while robots might take over cleaning tasks, they cannot replace the authentic human connections and service experiences.

RLWRLD anticipates that industrial AI robots will see large-scale implementation by 2028 and envisions a future where humanoid robots help the elderly at home, assisting with household activities and ensuring safety and efficiency.
