The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has launched an investigation after the uncommanded deployment of the emergency Ram Air Turbine (RAT) on Air India flight AI 117. The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, operating from Amritsar to Birmingham, landed safely without any reported issues.
Understanding the Ram Air Turbine
The Ram Air Turbine (RAT) is a small fan-like emergency device that deploys automatically when an aircraft loses power. It is designed to generate emergency electrical and hydraulic power in rare situations where both engines fail. In this case, the RAT activated at just 400 feet above the ground while the plane was preparing to land.
Aircraft Status and Safety Measures
Air India confirmed that all electrical and hydraulic systems were functioning normally after landing. Following standard safety procedures, the aircraft has been grounded for a detailed inspection to ensure the safety of passengers and crew. Boeing has also submitted a report confirming that recommended maintenance actions were completed, and no discrepancies were observed in the aircraft’s structure or functionality.
DGCA Investigation Launched
The DGCA’s Air Safety Department will conduct a comprehensive investigation into the incident. An officer from the Directorate of Air Safety has been assigned to probe the uncommanded RAT deployment to determine the cause and prevent similar occurrences in the future.
Past Incidents Involving the Aircraft Model
It is notable that the same Boeing 787-8 model was involved in the Ahmedabad plane crash in June this year. During that incident, the RAT deployed after a fuel supply cutoff caused engine shutdowns. The interim investigation report highlighted the technical reasons behind the deployment, making this current incident an important case for safety review.
Pilot and Flight Crew Response
The pilot of AI 117 did not report any abnormal situations during the flight. Despite the unexpected RAT deployment, the flight was safely landed in Birmingham, demonstrating the crew’s preparedness and the aircraft’s robust safety systems.
Importance of the Investigation
The DGCA aims to determine why the RAT deployed uncommanded mid-air on AI 117. Findings from the investigation will help reinforce safety measures, ensure proper maintenance protocols, and maintain passenger confidence in Air India’s operations.
Safety remains the top priority for airlines and aviation authorities. By grounding the aircraft and conducting a thorough inspection, Air India and the DGCA are working to prevent any recurrence and uphold global aviation safety standards.
