In a bold reaction to US President Donald Trump's recent comments regarding the Strait of Hormuz, Iranian officials took to social media to share a provocative map labeling California as a “new territory” belonging to Iran.
This exchange was initiated after Trump shared a post on Truth Social featuring the Strait of Hormuz, which he described as “NEW U.S. Territory.” The post emerged following his earlier suggestion that the important waterway might be claimed by the US after the current conflict subsides.
Subsequently, the White House amplified Trump’s post on X, heightening attention on the US's stance regarding the Strait of Hormuz.
In a satirical counter, the Iranian Consulate General in Hyderabad tweeted a map of the United States highlighting California in blue.
The accompanying message stated:
“NEW TERRITORY OF ISLAMIC REPUBLIC OF IRAN.”
The choice of California holds significance as it is home to a substantial Iranian-American population, especially in the Los Angeles area.
Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi reacted on X, labeling Trump's assertions regarding the Strait of Hormuz as “delusional.” He cautioned that either Trump would need to revise his views or Iran would contest what he termed the US president's misconceptions.

This exchange highlights the escalating political and diplomatic tensions between Tehran and Washington concerning this vital waterway.
California is notable for its extensive Iranian-American community, particularly in the Los Angeles region, often referred to as “Tehrangeles.” An estimated 141,000 Iranian Americans reside in Los Angeles County, according to the Iranian Diaspora Dashboard by UCLA's Center for Near Eastern Studies.
The Iranian-American population surged after the 1979 Iranian Revolution, turning Los Angeles into a cultural and business hub for Iranians outside of Iran.
The tensions come in the context of ongoing disputes between Iran and the United States, following months of conflict.
The Strait of Hormuz is a key maritime route connecting the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, crucial for global energy transportation.
A memorandum of understanding was signed between Iran and the US in June aimed at resolving the conflict and paving the way for a broader agreement; however, negotiations have encountered hurdles, particularly regarding implementation and navigation issues in the Strait.
Discussions with Oman on navigation specifics continue, yet no significant progress has been reported.
The social media interaction between Trump and Iranian officials reflects the underlying diplomatic strife between Washington and Tehran.
Trump’s assertions about the Strait of Hormuz and Iranian responses involving California injects a public and symbolic layer to the contentious relationship, focusing on control, navigation, and security in one of the world's major shipping channels.
The ongoing situation merits attention, as any disruption in the Strait of Hormuz could considerably impact international trade and global energy markets.
