Iranian-American Arrested for Alleged Arms Trafficking in Los Angeles

Post by : Shweta

In Los Angeles, U.S. federal authorities have arrested an Iranian-American woman on suspicion of trafficking weapons to various countries in Africa on behalf of the Iranian government.

The detained individual, identified as Shamim Mafi, was apprehended at Los Angeles International Airport on April 19, 2026. Authorities claim that she organized the sale of military equipment, including drones, explosives, and significant amounts of ammunition.

Prosecutors allege that Mafi collaborated with a co-conspirator from a company named Atlas International to facilitate illegal arms transactions. Investigations suggest that her activities occurred in diverse locations, including California. A notable transaction involved supplying drones manufactured in Iran to Sudan’s defense ministry, with a contract valued at over €60 million.

Officials claim Mafi accrued millions from coordinating meetings and travel arrangements linked to the arms deals. The complaint indicates she frequently traveled to countries such as Turkey, Oman, and Iran, having previously resided in Istanbul for several years.

Furthermore, U.S. officials revealed that Mafi has held lawful permanent status since 2016, yet allegedly maintains strong foreign connections. Investigators are also examining her past remarks, which include claims about her former husband’s associations with Iranian intelligence.

This case gains heightened significance amid the ongoing violence and humanitarian crisis in Sudan that has escalated since 2023. U.S. authorities consider the alleged arms transfers a major threat that could exacerbate instability in the region.

Mafi faces formal charges and could receive up to 20 years in prison upon conviction. Her initial hearing is scheduled for a federal court in Los Angeles.

The investigation remains active, with officials suggesting that additional details and other potential participants may surface as it progresses.
