In a significant escalation of hostilities, Iran executed a series of missile and drone strikes aimed at Kuwait and Bahrain late Tuesday, amplifying security fears in the Gulf region.
Kuwait's state media outlet KUNA reported that local authorities have advised residents to heed safety warnings and stay clear of any debris or unidentified objects stemming from the recent incidents.
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) indicated that two Iranian missiles directed at Kuwait either fell short or disintegrated mid-flight. Additionally, CENTCOM noted that several ballistic missiles aimed at regional sites failed to hit their targets, while three missiles heading toward Bahrain were successfully intercepted.
While neither Kuwait nor Bahrain has officially corroborated CENTCOM's account, Bahrain has activated warning sirens nationwide as a precaution.
Furthermore, CENTCOM reported that US forces thwarted Iranian drones targeting civilian vessels in nearby waters, as well as personnel stationed in Kuwait. In retaliation, the US military conducted strikes on Qeshm Island, located near the strategically critical Strait of Hormuz, following what were termed attempted Iranian raids.
Iran's state media, however, suggested that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) successfully targeted the US Fifth Fleet's headquarters in Bahrain and claimed additional strikes on an airbase and helicopters in another regional nation. Iran justified these actions as retaliation for a US strike on a communications structure south of Qeshm Island.
CENTCOM reiterated that all Iranian attacks were unsuccessful and emphasized that US forces are fully outfitted to counter what they describe as "unjustified Iranian aggression."
The recent altercations add to a history of Iranian assaults targeting US military points in the Gulf since hostilities intensified in late February. Notably, these incidents follow prior Iranian attacks on Kuwait on May 28 and June 1.
Although Iran and the US announced a tentative agreement last week aimed at halting the conflict, the deal remains unratified.
Recent reports from Iranian media highlighted limited direct communication between Tehran and Washington. However, US President Donald Trump confirmed that dialogues are ongoing.
In a post on social media, Trump reiterated that discussions have been consistently progressing over the past few days, even amid heightened military tensions.
