Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian has expressed his regret to Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani for Iran’s recent missile strike on a US military base in Qatar.

In a phone call on Tuesday, President Pezeshkian assured the Emir that the missile attack, which targeted the Al Udeid Air Base, was not aimed at Qatar or its people. He said the strike was not meant as a threat to Qatar and emphasised the strong ties between the two countries.

According to a statement from the Diwan (the Emir’s office), the Iranian president said Qatar will always be seen as a friendly Muslim neighbour, and he hopes that their relationship remains based on mutual respect and good neighbourliness.

Iran fired 19 missiles at the Al Udeid Air Base, the largest US base in the Middle East. Qatari officials confirmed that their defence forces intercepted 18 of them, and the base had already been evacuated before the attack. The missiles were reportedly launched in retaliation for a US military strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities a day earlier.

Residents in Doha and nearby areas reported seeing bright flares and hearing loud explosions during the attack.

Qatar's emir strongly condemned the missile strike, calling it a clear violation of Qatar’s airspace and national sovereignty.
