Israel Initiates Extensive Gaza Operation to Locate Final Hostage Amid Ceasefire Negotiations

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

Israel has commenced a “large-scale operation” in Gaza aimed at locating the last remaining hostage from the October 7, 2023 attack, coinciding with increasing pressure to advance the next phase of a fragile ceasefire. The timing is crucial, as international mediators, particularly from the United States, are pressing both Israel and Hamas to facilitate the easing of restrictions and promote regional stability.

The hostage, Ran Gvili, was killed during the attack over two years ago, and his body has remained in Gaza since then. The return of his remains has become a pivotal topic in Israeli politics and a deeply felt issue for the public. Many view the retrieval of his remains as the final milestone before Israel agrees to reopen the Rafah border crossing between Gaza and Egypt, crucial for progressing to the next phase of the ceasefire.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office has indicated that following the completion of the current military operation, Israel will cooperate with prior agreements made with the United States regarding the Rafah crossing. No definitive timeline has been provided, although military officials suggest the search could span several days. The Israeli Cabinet convened on Sunday to deliberate on the border crossing and broader ceasefire plans, following discussions held the previous day with senior U.S. envoys.

In an unusual move, Israel’s military has detailed more about the search operations. Officials have stated that troops are examining a cemetery in northern Gaza near the Yellow Line, which delineates the Israeli-controlled areas. Another military authority reported that there are indications Gvili may be interred in the Shijaiya-Tuffah region of Gaza City. Specialized teams, including rabbis and dental professionals, are being engaged to assist in identifying remains if found. The officials requested anonymity due to the ongoing nature of the operation.

Gvili’s family has advocated for the Israeli government not to proceed with the second phase of the ceasefire until his remains have been returned. This stance resonates with a large segment of the Israeli public, who contend that all hostages, whether alive or deceased, should be returned prior to any further concessions. The first phase of the ceasefire, which was initiated in October, saw Israel commit to recovering all outstanding hostages, with the last recovery prior to Sunday occurring in early December.

Simultaneously, international pressure is mounting. The Trump administration has recently indicated the second phase of the ceasefire is effectively underway. Hamas has meanwhile accused Israel of procrastination, stating that it has provided all available information regarding Gvili’s remains and claimed that Israel is impeding searches in territories under its military oversight. Conversely, Israel has consistently accused Hamas of reluctance and inadequate cooperation.

Tensions have escalated on another front as well. An overnight fire broke out at the decommissioned headquarters of the U.N. agency for Palestinian refugees, known as UNRWA, in east Jerusalem. The cause remains undetermined, but UN officials reported sightings of Israeli settlers entering the complex and removing furnishings, claiming sections of the perimeter had been breached. The local fire department has been working to manage the situation.

UNRWA officials condemned the occurrence, labeling it another strike against the agency amidst intensifying scrutiny over its operations. Israel has long claimed that UNRWA has been influenced by Hamas and has alleged that some personnel were involved in the 2023 assault. However, the agency has refuted these claims, asserting that it has taken action against employees accused of misconduct. Last year, Israel enacted legislation restricting UNRWA’s operations in areas it considers part of Israel, including east Jerusalem.

As Israel intensifies its search efforts in Gaza, the atmosphere remains fraught with uncertainty. The outcome of this operation could dictate the subsequent steps in the ceasefire process, the potential reopening of Gaza’s borders, and broader initiatives aimed at moving beyond a crippling war. Presently, the focus is squarely on recovering the last hostage and deliberating whether this agonizing chapter can reach a conclusion.
