Israel Set to Reopen Rafah Border Crossing, Offering New Hope to Gazans

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

In a significant move, Israel has declared the reopening of the Rafah border crossing with Egypt in the next few days, which could provide crucial relief to Palestinians confined within Gaza. For almost two years, leaving the area has posed great challenges, particularly for the ill, injured, and families affected by the ongoing conflict.

This decision has ignited new hope across Gaza, where thousands require urgent medical intervention no longer available locally. The healthcare system in Gaza has been severely impacted by the ongoing warfare, resulting in hospitals being incapable of conducting complex surgeries. According to the World Health Organization, upwards of 16,500 individuals urgently need evacuation from Gaza for medical care.

Despite the optimistic announcement, challenges loom regarding the reopening of the Rafah crossing. Israel has stipulated that any Palestinian wishing to exit must obtain security approvals from both Israeli and Egyptian authorities. The criteria for such approvals remain unclear, along with the number of individuals permitted to cross daily.

It is also crucial to note that Israel has stated Palestinians will only be allowed to leave Gaza but not enter until the hostages taken during the October 7, 2023, attacks are released. This stance has led to disputes with Egypt, which advocates for the crossing to function both ways. Egypt has consistently opposed the permanent settlement of Palestinians within its borders, citing security risks and demographic concerns.

Prior to the conflict, the Rafah crossing served as the sole direct link between Gaza and another nation, actively facilitating the movement of travelers, traders, and goods with Egypt. However, following the October 2023 Hamas-led assault on southern Israel, resulting in approximately 1,200 fatalities and 251 hostages captured, Egypt enforced stricter movement regulations.

After Israel took control of the Gaza side in May 2024 as part of its military operations, the crossing was effectively closed, only reopening briefly for specific medical emergencies. As per Gaza's Health Ministry, over 70,100 Palestinians have lost their lives since the start of the conflict. Though the ministry is under Hamas governance, it maintains casualty statistics that international agencies recognize as reliable.

A fully operational Rafah crossing could also ease economic pressures. With Gaza's economy having been ravaged and trade halted for months, reopening the crossing would enable merchants to transport goods, support local businesses, and reconnect Gaza to larger regional markets.

An Israeli representative has indicated that the European Union's mission managing the crossing is working on logistical preparations prior to its reopening. Nevertheless, extensive damage from the conflict may necessitate repairs before full operations can resume. Disputes between Israel and Egypt regarding entry permissions for Gaza may also complicate progress.

According to Egypt’s State Information Service, a mutual agreement could allow the crossing to operate both ways under a ceasefire arrangement backed by U.S. President Donald Trump. Egypt has emphasized its refusal to accept an influx of refugees from Gaza due to security apprehensions in the Sinai Peninsula and the objective of establishing an independent Palestinian state that encompasses the West Bank, Gaza, and East Jerusalem.

Meanwhile, Israel has reiterated that no person will be permitted to enter Gaza until all hostages are returned. Spokesperson Shosh Bedrosian affirmed this condition remains unchanged. Recently, the remains of two hostages were recovered, although their identities are yet to be disclosed.

As negotiations continue, residents of Gaza await anxiously. Families seeking medical attention, students eager to travel abroad, and those longing to connect with relatives in Egypt see the reopening of the Rafah border crossing as a crucial opportunity after enduring years of isolation.
