Israeli airstrikes in southern Lebanon have claimed the lives of at least seven individuals and caused injuries to many others, as tensions with Hezbollah escalate despite a standing ceasefire. The attacks notably impacted a Catholic convent in the border village of Yaroun, leading to significant damage.
As reported by local fresh media and officials, the recent strikes hit multiple villages including Kfar Dajal, Lwaizeh, and Shoukin, with the National News Agency noting fatalities in these areas due to residential airstrikes and targeted vehicles.
Despite an officially maintained ceasefire since April 17, hostilities have resurfaced, perpetuating instability in the border region and displacing numerous civilians from their homes.
In Yaroun, a contentious incident saw Israeli forces utilizing bulldozers to demolish parts of a convent belonging to the Basilian Salvatorian Sisters. The convent, which housed a school and a medical clinic, had ceased operations due to the ongoing conflict.
Gladys Sabbagh, head of the Basilian Salvatorian Sisters, confirmed the demolition, noting that the two residing nuns had evacuated earlier over security fears. The rising number of displaced residents in Yaroun reflects the mounting pressures from nearby hostilities.
The Israeli military justified these actions by alleging that the demolished building was being used by Hezbollah for military purposes, asserting that the initial attack was a mistake due to the lack of religious identifiers on the structure. The military claimed operations ceased upon realization of its religious significance.
However, local Church leaders have refuted this assertion. Rev. Abdo Abou Kassm from the Catholic Center for Information in Lebanon stressed that the convent had no military connection and underscored the sanctity of religious sites.
The incident has heightened anxieties among Lebanon's Christian communities, especially after prior incidents of damage to churches during the conflict. A recent video showing damage to a statue of Jesus in Debel sparked widespread outrage.
Human rights organizations continue to raise alarms concerning the impacts on civilians and places of worship, highlighting damage to multiple Christian sites due to military actions.
Israel maintains its operations are concentrated on neutralizing Hezbollah's capabilities and safeguarding northern communities. Recent statements indicate extensive airstrikes were conducted targeting identified military positions within southern Lebanon.
The ongoing conflict presents severe humanitarian challenges in southern Lebanon, with thousands displaced as continued airstrikes and shelling contribute to substantial destruction of infrastructure and homes.
International observers express concerns regarding the potential deterioration of the ceasefire, fearing an escalation into a broader regional conflict. Diplomatic efforts to ease tensions persist, yet the cycle of violence remains a pressing threat.
