Mid-Flight Deviation Concerns as ISRO Examines PSLV-C62 Data

Mid-Flight Deviation Concerns as ISRO Examines PSLV-C62 Data

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

On Monday, the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) faced a significant challenge during its 64th mission, when unexpected deviations were recorded mid-flight. The PSLV-C62 launched from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota at 10:18 AM with EOS-N1 and 14 additional co-passenger satellites aboard. While the beginning of the launch was flawless, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) later reported a discrepancy during the rocket's third stage.

ISRO Chairman Dr. V. Narayanan emphasized that experts are rigorously analyzing the flight data to pinpoint the issue. So far, he has refrained from labeling the mission as a success or failure, indicating a measured and scientific approach is being taken prior to any definitive conclusions. ISRO has committed to providing complete details once the analysis wraps up.

This particular mission holds considerable significance following a PSLV failure in 2025. The PSLV is regarded as one of India's most dependable launch vehicles, boasting an impressive success rate. Hence, any concerns regarding such a reliable rocket are of global interest. Nevertheless, experts recognize that temporary challenges are part of space exploration and can catalyze advancements in technology.

PSLV-C62 was tasked with deploying a total of 15 satellites. The principal payload, EOS-N1, aims to enhance India's Earth observation capabilities. Among the satellite array is Anvesha, a surveillance satellite developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), engineered for advanced imaging to assist in the monitoring of sensitive areas. Additionally, the Kestrel Initial Demonstrator satellite was meant for a controlled re-entry mission.

The launch also signified a landmark for India's private space sector, as a single Indian private entity, Hyderabad-based Dhruva Space, supplied seven satellites for this PSLV mission. This showcases the expanding contributions of private firms alongside ISRO in shaping the future of India's space endeavors.

Despite the raised concerns about the deviation, ISRO's composed reaction underscores its experience and confidence in handling such problems. Space missions are intricate, and even minor alterations in flight patterns necessitate exhaustive investigations. Such reviews typically lead engineers to enhance designs and mitigate future issues.

The nation now awaits ISRO's comprehensive report. Regardless of the findings, this mission illustrates the enduring challenges and resilience of India’s space program. Key components of ISRO’s ethos include transparency, detailed analysis, and a commitment to continuous enhancement. As data evaluation persists, the focus is on extracting lessons from this experience to ensure stronger, safer missions in the future.
