Bolsonaro Taken into Custody Before Serving Sentence in Brazil Coup Case

Post by : Bianca Haleem

On Saturday, Brazil's political landscape was rocked as former President Jair Bolsonaro was arrested by federal authorities in Brasília, just before he was set to commence a 27-year prison term due to his participation in a failed coup.

The Supreme Court, led by Justice Alexandre de Moraes, mandated this arrest after reports surfaced of Bolsonaro allegedly interfering with his court-ordered ankle monitor. The court highlighted concerns about the possibility of him seeking shelter at nearby embassies or absconding amid anticipated protests from his supporters.

Bolsonaro, aged 70, was transferred from his residence in the affluent Jardim Botânico area to the federal police facility early Saturday. The Justice emphasized the need for the arrest to respect the dignity of Bolsonaro, avoiding any usage of handcuffs or unnecessary media attention.

This arrest occurred shortly after a video posted by Bolsonaro's son, Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, which authorities believe incited supporters to contravene judicial edicts. Justice de Moraes characterized this video as an attempt to disrupt public order and weaken democratic processes.

In response, Bolsonaro’s supporters voiced strong opposition to the arrest, labeling it as an unjust action influenced by political motives. Former first lady Michelle Bolsonaro expressed on social media that they “will not abandon our nation,” while party leaders pledged to stand by him. Detractors pointed out that the ankle monitor was operating correctly and questioned the timing of the police action.

Bolsonaro continues to be a controversial figure in Brazil's political arena. Along with several associates, he was convicted for spearheading an armed entity that sought to upend the government following his loss to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in the 2022 election. Prosecutors alleged that the conspiracy included plans to assassinate Lula and provoke unrest in early 2023.

Despite being barred from running for public office until 2030, Bolsonaro maintains considerable sway over far-right constituents in Brazil. His international connections, particularly with former U.S. President Donald Trump, ensure that his case remains in the global spotlight.
