India’s young opener, Yashasvi Jaiswal, had a disappointing outing in the first Test against England. The 23-year-old’s fielding mistakes proved costly as he dropped four key catches across the match. These errors played a big part in England’s win, giving them a 1-0 lead in the series.
What made matters worse was a video that went viral from the fifth day at Headingley, Leeds. It showed Jaiswal smiling and dancing near the boundary line while engaging with the English crowd. The timing was poor, coming just minutes after he missed a crucial catch of Ben Duckett.
That particular drop was especially damaging. Duckett, on 97 runs when the catch was missed, went on to score 149. His innings helped England chase down a tough target of 371—one of the highest successful fourth-innings chases against India.
Before this, Jaiswal had also dropped Ollie Pope on Day 2, who scored a century, and Harry Brook on Day 3, who was just one run short of a hundred with 99. These missed chances allowed England to keep the pressure on India during the first innings.
While Jaiswal has impressed with the bat recently, his fielding performance attracted strong criticism. Many fans felt his casual attitude on the field did not reflect the seriousness of the moment, especially since his drops had a direct impact on India’s defeat.
