Japan Arrests Chinese Fishing Boat Captain, Tensions Rise

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Japanese authorities seized a Chinese fishing boat and arrested its 47-year-old captain on Thursday inside Japan’s exclusive economic zone near Nagasaki Prefecture, officials said. The vessel, carrying 11 people including the captain, failed to comply with an inspection order and attempted to flee.

This is the first time since 2022 that Japan has seized a Chinese fishing boat. The incident comes amid already strained ties between Japan and China over territorial disputes, including repeated incidents near the Senkaku Islands, known as Diaoyu in China.

The arrest adds tension after Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi angered Beijing in November by suggesting Japan might intervene militarily if China tries to take Taiwan by force. China has long claimed Taiwan as its territory and has not ruled out using force to assert control.

Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te warned that if China seizes Taiwan, the move could destabilize the Indo-Pacific, threatening countries like Japan and the Philippines, with global repercussions.

Following Takaichi’s comments, China summoned Japan’s ambassador, warned its citizens against visiting Japan, and conducted joint air drills with Russia. In December, Chinese J-15 jets locked radar on Japanese aircraft near Okinawa, and China also restricted exports of strategic materials and suspended Japanese seafood imports.

Takaichi, 64, Japan’s first female prime minister, recently won a landslide election and remains open to dialogue with China. However, Beijing insists that dialogue must be based on respect and has urged Japan to withdraw remarks about Taiwan.
