Switzerland secured a place in the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals for the first time since 1954 after defeating Colombia 4-3 in a penalty shootout following a goalless 120 minutes. Ruben Vargas scored the winning penalty as the Swiss booked a last-eight meeting with defending champions Argentina.
The match remained level throughout regular time and extra time, with both teams creating chances but failing to find the breakthrough. The contest was finally decided from the penalty spot, where Switzerland held their nerve to make history.
The penalty shootout turned in Switzerland's favour after goalkeeper Gregor Kobel saved Cucho Hernandez's spot kick. Earlier in the shootout, Colombia defender Davinson Sanchez struck the crossbar, giving Switzerland an important advantage.
Switzerland also suffered a setback during the shootout when Manuel Akanji fired his penalty over the bar. However, Ruben Vargas calmly placed the decisive penalty into the bottom corner to seal a memorable victory.
Speaking after the match, Vargas said: "It is very difficult for me to realise what we achieved today."
He added: "I'm grateful for this moment. It was an amazing match for me. For 120 minutes, we gave it all on the pitch. We faced a strong opponent, but now we made history... It was amazing that I could score the decisive penalty."
Colombia were aiming to reach the World Cup quarter-finals for only the second time in their history after previously achieving the feat at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
They entered the match in Vancouver with one of the tournament's strongest defensive records, having conceded only one goal in their earlier matches. Despite another disciplined performance, Colombia were unable to convert their opportunities and eventually lost in the shootout.

The best opportunity of the first half came in the 21st minute when Colombia midfielder Gustavo Puerta curled a shot from around 18 yards towards the far corner. Gregor Kobel produced an outstanding diving save to keep the score level.
Switzerland responded shortly afterwards through Fabian Rieder, but Colombia goalkeeper Camilo Vargas denied his effort from a narrow angle.
Swiss winger Dan Ndoye almost secured victory in stoppage time at the end of normal time. After making a clever run, he dragged a low shot narrowly wide of the far post.
Extra time also produced a major chance for Colombia. Centre-back Jhon Lucumi rose unmarked to meet a corner, but his powerful header struck the crossbar. Both teams continued pushing for a winner before the match went to penalties.
Switzerland were forced to cope without 20-year-old attacker Johan Manzambi, who missed the match after suffering a knee injury during training.
Manzambi had been one of Switzerland's standout performers at the tournament, contributing three goals and two assists before the knockout match.
This is Switzerland's sixth consecutive FIFA World Cup appearance. While they have consistently qualified for the tournament, they had been eliminated in the Round of 16 at the 2006, 2014, 2018 and 2022 editions.
The victory finally ended that run and earned Switzerland their fourth World Cup quarter-final appearance overall. The result also helped erase the disappointment of UEFA Euro 2024, where they were knocked out by England 5-3 on penalties in the quarter-finals.
Celebrations erupted at BC Place in Vancouver after Ruben Vargas converted the winning penalty. The entire Swiss squad rushed onto the pitch to celebrate the historic achievement.
BC Place was dominated by Colombia supporters, whose numbers far exceeded those of the Swiss fans.
The stadium was filled with yellow shirts as Colombian supporters loudly backed their team throughout the match, cheering every attack and putting pressure on Switzerland whenever they had possession.
Switzerland will now face defending champions Argentina in the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals in Kansas City.
Argentina secured their place after producing a dramatic comeback from two goals behind to defeat Egypt 3-2 earlier on Tuesday.
