Almost three weeks of heavy snowfall in Japan has claimed 46 lives and left 558 people injured, according to new data released Tuesday by the Fire and Disaster Management Agency.
Snowfall has continued since late January, heavily affecting northern parts of the country. Several communities have been buried under thick snow, while major roads have faced traffic disruption, especially in areas along the coast facing the Sea of Japan.
Police and local officials said many of the deaths happened during snow removal. In several cases, residents were hit by falling snow from rooftops, while others died after slipping or falling while clearing snow.
In Aomori, a major city in northern Japan, snow levels have reached around 1.3 metres (more than 4 feet), according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.
Authorities are urging residents to take extra precautions while removing snow, as the severe winter conditions continue in the region.
