Seventeen individuals lost their lives when a jeep veered off a rugged road and fell nearly 700 metres into a gorge in Nepal's Rolpa district this Thursday, as reported by local law enforcement. The incident occurred in the Jaljala area of Thawang Rural Municipality, a remote and perilous region characterized by hazardous travel routes.
According to authorities, the vehicle lost traction on a muddy path during a downpour. It reportedly slipped off the precarious mountain pass and plummeted into the gorge below. Local residents and rescue teams responded swiftly to the scene, although inclement weather hampered rescue efforts significantly.
The private jeep was reportedly hired by local villagers en route to the Baisakh Purnima festival set for Friday in Jaljala. Police Inspector Sunil Thapa Nepali, from the District Police Office, confirmed that the passengers were heading to this religious gathering when the tragic mishap occurred.
While the total number of passengers remains uncertain, initial findings suggested that the jeep may have been transporting more people than usual, a common occurrence in Nepal's remote hills where transport options are scarce. Authorities have cautioned that the death toll could rise as search and identification efforts continue.
This incident calls attention to the persistent road safety issues in Nepal's mountainous areas. Inadequate road infrastructure, narrow mountain routes, adverse weather, and overloaded vehicles frequently result in catastrophic accidents throughout the nation. During the monsoon season, muddy roads and landslides further exacerbate the risks of travel in regions like Rolpa.
Despite adverse conditions, local police, emergency responders, and community members worked tirelessly to recover victims into the evening hours. Additional security personnel were deployed to assist with the operation and help transport victims from the challenging landscape.
Nepal has experienced many fatal road incidents in recent years due to its challenging mountainous terrain and fragile transport network. Safety advocates continuously urge the implementation of stricter road safety regulations, improved vehicle oversight, and enhanced emergency response systems to lessen the occurrence of fatal accidents in remote areas.
