Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night talk show, which was suddenly stopped last week, will return on Tuesday, Disney said on Monday. The show had been pulled after complaints from conservatives and pressure from the US government.
Reason For The Suspension
ABC, owned by Disney, paused the show after Kimmel made strong comments following the shooting of Christian activist Charlie Kirk. Disney said they wanted to avoid making a tense national situation worse.
Disney’s Official Statement
Disney explained that they stopped the show because they felt some of Kimmel’s words were badly timed and insensitive. After holding careful talks with Kimmel, the company decided the show should come back on air.
Backlash From Liberals
Kimmel’s removal caused anger among liberals, who said he was being targeted for criticizing President Donald Trump. They called it an attack on free speech, which is a key American right.
Trump’s Reaction To Removal
President Trump celebrated the suspension and called it “Great News for America.” But critics said this showed how the government was trying to control what people can say in the media.
Unease Among Conservatives
Even some conservatives, like Senator Ted Cruz and broadcaster Tucker Carlson, were uncomfortable with how the government stepped in. They warned that this could set a bad example for freedom of expression.
FCC Threat Against ABC
The controversy grew after FCC Chairman Brendan Carr suggested that ABC affiliates could lose their licenses if they continued to broadcast Kimmel’s show. This warning put heavy pressure on broadcasters.
Affiliates Remove The Show
Large station owners like Nexstar and Sinclair quickly pulled the show. Nexstar is also waiting for FCC approval on a big merger, so the threat carried extra weight. Sinclair said it will not air the show yet, even after Disney announced its return.
Comments By Jimmy Kimmel
Before the suspension, Kimmel criticized how Trump reacted to Kirk’s death. He joked that Trump cared more about a new ballroom at the White House than about mourning a friend. Kimmel’s comments angered Trump’s supporters.
Hollywood Voices Support
Many Hollywood stars, including Tom Hanks, Jennifer Aniston, Meryl Streep, Robert De Niro, and Pedro Pascal, signed a letter defending Kimmel. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) also supported the letter, calling the suspension a dangerous attack on freedom of speech.
ACLU Welcomes Return
After Disney announced that the show will come back, the ACLU praised the decision. They said ABC had made the right call by standing for free speech and creative expression.
