194-Year-Old Jonathan Sets Record as World's Oldest Land Animal

194-Year-Old Jonathan Sets Record as World's Oldest Land Animal

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Jonathan, a Seychelles giant tortoise living on the South Atlantic island of St Helena, has been officially recognised as the world's oldest known terrestrial animal and the oldest turtle ever recorded, according to Guinness World Records.

Jonathan is believed to have been born around 1832, making him approximately 194 years old. His remarkable lifespan means he is older than several famous landmarks and historical periods, including the Victorian Age, London's Tower Bridge, and Paris's Eiffel Tower.

The giant tortoise, scientifically known as Aldabrachelys gigantea Hololissa, has spent much of his life on St Helena, where he continues to live in the gardens of the Governor's residence.

Despite his advanced age, veterinarians say Jonathan remains in good health. Although he has lost his sense of smell due to old age, he still enjoys a healthy appetite and continues to live an active and comfortable life.

Scientists are also studying Jonathan's DNA to better understand the secrets behind his extraordinary longevity. Researchers have found that his cells do not appear to mutate in the same way as human cells, raising hopes that the research could provide valuable insights into the ageing process.

Known affectionately as "Jono" by local residents, Jonathan spends his days grazing on grass, relaxing in the sunshine, and living alongside three other tortoises. He is also famous for celebrating his birthday with a special vegan cake each year.

Jonathan's incredible age and healthy condition continue to fascinate scientists and animal lovers around the world, making him one of the most extraordinary living creatures on Earth.
