3D Printed Bridge to Rise in Singapore's Jurong

Post by : Shakul

In an innovative move, Singapore is embarking on the construction of its inaugural 3D-printed concrete bridge in Jurong. This initiative, spearheaded by the Land Transport Authority, aims to be completed by 2028 and will improve linkages between Jurong West and Tengah town.

Stretching 10 metres in length and 5 metres in width, the bridge will accommodate pedestrians and cyclists alike. It forms part of a pilot project designed to assess the potential of 3D concrete printing to elevate productivity in Singapore's challenging construction landscape. Collaborators for this venture include Nanyang Technological University, engineering firm Witteveen+Bos, and construction leader CES_Innovfab.

The 3D concrete printing technique employs an automated process where layers of concrete are deposited through a nozzle, allowing for structure formation without the need for traditional moulds. This modern method not only minimizes manual labor but also cuts down on temporary construction needs, while enabling intricate architectural designs that surpass conventional methods.

Assessments on a scaled model have been successfully carried out using heavy load simulations. Should these meet safety regulations, the construction of the full-scale bridge will commence, followed by additional tests prior to public opening. Officials indicate that this venture will critically evaluate the long-term viability of adopting 3D printing technology in urban infrastructure development.
