Member of Parliament and actress Kangana Ranaut voiced her outrage over the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to manipulate her official Parliament photos. The modified images showed her clad in formal suits, diverging from her usual saree attire. Kangana condemned these alterations as a breach of her personal freedoms.
The uproar started when AI-generated visuals of Kangana spread across social media, portraying her leaving Parliament in blue, brown, and rust suits. The original snapshots captured her traditional saree wear, a staple since she assumed her Lok Sabha MP role from Mandi in June 2024.
Kangana responded by sharing one altered portrayal on her Instagram Stories, demanding that users cease manipulating her images with AI technology. She highlighted that the original images reflected her saree choice and accused individuals of abusing tech to adjust her appearance without permission.
In a pointed message, Kangana revealed her dismay at regularly encountering AI-edited versions of herself showcasing various outfits and makeup styles. She described this phenomenon as troubling and unacceptable. Asserting her autonomy, she stated that clothing and appearance are personal matters, with no one else entitled to modify them through technology.
“This is violating beyond words,” she remarked, urging individuals to refrain from “dressing up others” via AI edits. Kangana underlined that her representation, especially in a solemn environment like Parliament, is solely her prerogative.
The incident highlights the escalating concern surrounding the misuse of AI on social media platforms. As AI technologies become increasingly sophisticated and readily available, worries regarding privacy, consent, and ethical use grow. Public figures, particularly women, are frequently subjected to these manipulative edits.
Kangana has consistently been outspoken on pressing issues spanning film, politics, and social matters. Her recent reaction echoes the broader unease regarding AI's irresponsible application and its implications for personal respect.
Beyond her political engagement, Kangana boasts a distinguished cinematic career, debuting in 2006 with Gangster before achieving acclaim for her roles in Queen, Fashion, Tanu Weds Manu, and Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi. Her accolades include multiple National Film Awards and the Padma Shri for her artistic contributions to Indian cinema.
Transitioning to directing, she recently starred in Emergency, where she portrayed former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Released in January, the film marked another milestone in her illustrious career. Additionally, Kangana is poised to make her Hollywood entry in the horror drama Blessed Be the Evil, with production set to commence in New York this summer.
As discussions on AI, consent, and digital ethics evolve, Kangana Ranaut's forceful stance serves as a vital reminder that personal dignity and choice must be protected amidst technological advances.
