In Kantara Chapter 1, Berme (Rishab Shetty) tells his mother Mangala about the importance of business, symbolizing both achievement and the rights of their marginalised community. Berme’s choice to fight for his people forms the movie’s core theme. Director Rishab Shetty expands this idea on a large scale, making the prequel appear far grander than the 2022 original.
The Forest and Royal Conflict
The story revolves around the mysterious forest of Kantara. The Kadamba dynasty eyes the sacred Eshwarana Hoothota, belonging to the tribal people. While the first film focused on a landlord’s greed, the prequel elevates the conflict to the royals’ prestige. When Prince Kulasekhara (Gulshan Devaiah) attempts to encroach on Kantara, Berme becomes the barrier defending his people’s land.
Humour and Early Challenges
The film’s first half mixes humour with intense scenes, which sometimes disrupts the flow. Abrupt cuts and Rishab’s urgency to convey plot points make the opening slightly uneven. Some action sequences, like a thrilling chariot scene, prioritize spectacle over plot, but help maintain momentum.
Authentic World-Building
Despite early challenges, the film excels in world-building. Kantara Chapter 1 authentically portrays indigenous life with impressive costumes, makeup, and sets. The environment feels native, bringing the folklore and tribal culture vividly to the big screen.
Religious Themes and Cinematic Grandeur
After establishing the plot, the film delivers a religious-themed spectacle. Cinematographer Arvind Kashyap captures grand war drama sequences, while composer Ajaneesh Loknath enhances tension with songs like ‘Brahmakalasha’ and the battle theme ‘Rebel’. The tribal-royal conflict reaches a visual and emotional peak, with top-class CGI and adrenaline-filled action sequences.
Portrayal of Folklore and Characters
Kantara Chapter 1 traces the origin of daivas (holy spirits) and the spiritual beliefs of Tulunadu. Rishab Shetty continues his strong performance from the first part, portraying divine possession and the power of a deity. Rukmini Vasanth delivers a standout performance, showcasing strong dialogue delivery and screen presence.
Emotional Undercurrent and Spectacle
While the prequel occasionally loses the deeper emotional connection of the original film, its scale and spectacle compensate. The story of tribal struggles for inclusivity remains moving, though slightly overshadowed by grandeur. The filmmakers’ commitment to scale and entertainment ensures that audiences are thoroughly engaged.
Kantara Chapter 1 succeeds as a visually stunning, action-packed prequel that elevates the story of Berme and the tribal community. Despite minor narrative gaps, Rishab Shetty’s creative vision and the film’s technical brilliance make it a must-watch for fans of folklore and epic storytelling.
