In Hong Kong, media mogul Jimmy Lai attended a pivotal hearing at the High Court on Monday, marking the final step before his sentencing in a prominent national security trial. The 78-year-old pro-democracy figure might be subjected to life behind bars following his conviction last month.
Lai, who established the defunct Apple Daily, was convicted of conspiracy to collaborate with foreign entities and conspiracy to disseminate seditious content under the national security law imposed by China. He has consistently refuted all allegations.
This trial has garnered worldwide scrutiny, drawing condemnation from the United Kingdom, the European Union, and the United States. Nevertheless, Hong Kong authorities argue that the legal proceedings were just and that the national security law has reinstated order in the city.
During the hearing, Lai’s legal team sought a more lenient sentence. Sentences under the national security law can span from 10 years to life. Lai was present in a glass enclosure alongside eight other co-defendants, monitored by prison guards and separated from onlookers.
Prosecutors addressed inquiries about Lai's well-being, referencing a medical report dated January 9, which confirmed that his condition is “stable.” Several crucial witnesses from the prosecution, including Andy Li and Wayland Chan Tsz-wah, provided significant testimony against him.
As a long-time critic of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and an advocate for press freedom in Hong Kong, Lai used Apple Daily as a platform to campaign against the CCP, even at the risk of public interest in China and Hong Kong, according to the judges.
The hearing has attracted considerable public attention, with almost 100 supporters forming a line outside the court, with some camping there for days. Many expressed their support for Lai, asserting he had done nothing wrong.
Internationally, the case has gained attention as well; U.S. President Donald Trump allegedly urged Chinese President Xi Jinping to release Lai, referring to him as a “positive activist,” but did not receive a reply.
This mitigation hearing will be instrumental in determining Lai’s sentence, possibly affecting media freedom, civil liberties, and the trajectory of pro-democracy movements in Hong Kong.
