King Felipe VI Enhances Spain-China Relations During State Visit

Post by : Bianca Haleem

During a historic official visit to China, Spain’s King Felipe VI met with President Xi Jinping on Wednesday, sealing agreements designed to enhance language exchanges, trade relations, and overall collaboration. This visit stands as King Felipe's first official trip to China, reflecting Spain’s commitment to strengthening its ties with Beijing.

Upon arrival, the Spanish royal couple, alongside Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares, received a warm welcome, complete with a military band and a 21-gun salute at the Great Hall of the People, emphasizing the significance of this state visit.

Xi Jinping expressed China's eagerness to collaborate with Spain in establishing a “comprehensive strategic partnership” within today’s multifaceted global environment. The signed agreements focus on economic cooperation, enhancing language education, and promoting the export of Spanish seafood to China. Both nations aim to expand their trade relations, especially in the fields of renewable energy, artificial intelligence, and sustainable technologies.

The visit initiated in Chengdu, where King Felipe attended a Spain-China business forum alongside Spanish business leaders and government ministers. Home to 49.4 million residents, Spain is positioning itself as one of the EU countries most receptive to engagements with China. Current trade dynamics show that imports from China to Spain surpass exports, indicating potential for a more balanced trading environment.

This visit reinforces previous high-level interactions, including Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez's recent trip to China in April. Over recent years, numerous agreements have been made between Spanish and Chinese firms, notably the collaboration between CATL and Stellantis for a battery manufacturing facility in northern Spain, as well as ventures in green hydrogen infrastructure. Spain's shift towards renewable energy, which accounted for over half of its electricity generation last year, is closely linked to its access to Chinese resources, solar technology, and innovations.

In addition, King Felipe is scheduled to meet with Chinese Premier Li Qiang and Zhao Leji, the chairman of the National People’s Congress, as Spain continues to strategically fortify its economic, cultural, and technological partnerships with the second-largest global economy.
