Korea Zinc's $7.4 Billion U.S. Smelter Project Gets Legal Green Light

Korea Zinc's $7.4 Billion U.S. Smelter Project Gets Legal Green Light

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

A South Korean court has dismissed a motion from two significant shareholders to halt Korea Zinc’s initiative to issue fresh shares for its $7.4 billion smelter venture in the United States. This verdict enables the company to continue its U.S. expansion, resulting in a nearly 5% rise in Korea Zinc shares, while shares of YoungPoong fell by almost 10%.

The smelter in Tennessee is a pivotal project aimed at aiding the U.S. in reducing reliance on China for minerals essential for electronics, chips, and defense technologies. Korea Zinc plans to offer $1.9 billion in shares to a joint venture led by the U.S. government and strategic investors, allowing the U.S. partners to acquire around a 10% stake in the South Korean entity.

MBK Partners and YoungPoong, which collectively hold about 46% of Korea Zinc, have voiced apprehensions regarding shareholder dilution and the equity of the arrangement. Nonetheless, despite the court’s ruling, both firms have indicated their intention to back the U.S. smelter initiative, believing it will be beneficial for the United States, Korea Zinc, and the South Korean economy.

This project may also reinforce the authority of Korea Zinc Chairman Yun B. Choi. Choi has been engaged in a power struggle with MBK Partners and YoungPoong since last year. Granting shares to U.S. investors might shift the control dynamics favorably for Choi.

Korea Zinc asserts that the smelter initiative aligns with U.S. strategic objectives for diversifying mineral supply chains, offering the company a stronghold in the largest market for critical minerals globally. Analysts regard this move as a significant step toward long-term international growth and industrial synergy.

Ultimately, the court’s decision eliminates a significant legal barrier for Korea Zinc. The project's advancement is poised to bolster the company’s international footprint, support U.S. industrial ambitions, and foster new prospects for the South Korean economy.
