The former Wimbledon finalist Nick Kyrgios has confirmed his participation in the upcoming Kooyong Classic, an exhibition event that serves as a prelude to the Australian Open. This move reflects his commitment to returning to competitive tennis following a challenging 2025 season marred by injuries.
At 30 years old, Kyrgios, known for his dynamic style and spirited performances, has grappled with serious injuries in recent years. His appearances in 2025 were limited to just five singles matches, with his last showing being at the Miami Open in March. These challenges have seen him plummet to 666th in the world rankings, leaving him without a protected ranking.
Due to his current ranking, Kyrgios will require wildcards to secure entry into any ATP warm-up events and the Australian Open itself. However, considering his previous success, including a title at the Brisbane International, and his popularity among fans in Melbourne, these wildcards are expected to be granted.
Kyrgios’ itinerary for the remainder of 2025 includes several exhibition matches, notably a match against Aryna Sabalenka in Dubai on December 28. These appearances are part of his strategy to regain his match fitness and competitive edge ahead of the new season.
The Kooyong Classic promises a competitive lineup next year, featuring prominent Italian players such as Flavio Cobolli, Matteo Berrettini, and World No. 8 Lorenzo Musetti confirmed for the men's competition. This event was cancelled this year due to logistical issues but is scheduled to return from January 13 to 15, just days before the Australian Open kicks off at Melbourne Park.
Kyrgios' participation is likely to attract significant attention from both fans and media alike. His unique blend of powerful serves and creative shot-making ensures he remains a fan favorite globally. Organizers are optimistic that his involvement will enhance ticket sales and viewership for the Kooyong Classic, making it an essential event leading up to the Grand Slam season.
The Kooyong Classic offers players a valuable chance to acclimatize to match conditions in Australia, refine strategies, and build confidence on hard courts prior to the Australian Open. For Kyrgios, who has faced hurdles with fitness due to injuries, this exhibition is a critical milestone in his comeback journey.
Moreover, the tournament presents an opportunity for other elite players to hone their skills, connect with fans, and engage in competitive match play ahead of the first Grand Slam of the year. The revival of the Kooyong Classic is seen as a fantastic development for tennis enthusiasts and a prime opportunity for Kyrgios to return to form on the court.
