In Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan organized its inaugural international symposium focusing on organ donation and transplantation, uniting eminent scientists, surgeons, and medical professionals from over ten nations. This event is a pivotal step in enhancing the country’s healthcare framework and advancing its capabilities in transplant services.
Ulan Mamatkanov, Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers, underlined the critical role of organ transplantation in lifesaving through contemporary medical techniques, progressive treatment strategies, and global scientific partnerships.
Participants noted that the symposium provided a vital opportunity for medical knowledge exchange, fostering collaboration and the integration of best practices in organ transplantation. Key topics included enhancing transplant systems, optimizing medical facilities, and developing specialists skilled in executing intricate transplant operations.
Recent government statistics revealed a substantial increase in healthcare investment in Kyrgyzstan, with funding escalating from 21.5 billion soms in 2021 to a projected 52 billion soms by 2025. Additionally, reforms have led to improved salaries for healthcare personnel to boost the national healthcare framework.
Over the past three years, state sponsorship facilitated 55 kidney transplant surgeries, with 42 performed at the National Center for Motherhood and Child Protection and 13 at the Kyrgyz-Turkish Friendship Hospital named after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Officials also noted that Kyrgyzstan has successfully conducted three liver transplants with governmental aid and celebrated its first bone marrow transplant operation in 2024, marking significant strides in its transplant medicine sector.
During the symposium, specialists deliberated on contemporary strategies for kidney, liver, and heart transplants, as well as organ donation frameworks, anesthesia management, immunological compatibility, and the ethical and legal dilemmas surrounding transplantation. Particular emphasis was placed on pediatric transplants and the necessity for advanced training for emerging medical professionals.
Mamatkanov reassured that the government would persist in encouraging the growth of transplant services, enhancing international medical collaboration and investing in healthcare infrastructure aimed at elevating care quality and ultimately saving more lives.
