Famous Kannada novelist and philosopher Santeshivara Lingannaiah Bhyrappa passed away at the age of 94 on Wednesday. He suffered a cardiac arrest at Rashtrotthana Hospital in Bengaluru. Doctors confirmed that he breathed his last at 2:38 pm. His passing marks the end of a legendary chapter in Indian literature.

Rashtrotthana Hospital released an official statement expressing deep sorrow. The hospital described him as a legendary novelist and philosopher who had been honored with Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, and Saraswati Samman, among many other awards. The statement read that he “reached the lotus feet of the Almighty,” and prayers were offered for his soul.

He also praised Bhyrappa’s passion for India’s history and culture, calling his legacy everlasting.
President Murmu’s Condolence Message
President Droupadi Murmu also shared her condolences. She described Bhyrappa as a “towering figure in Kannada literature” and highlighted his contributions to philosophy, culture, and intellectual inquiry. She said his works brought Kannada literature to national and global recognition while staying true to its cultural roots. The President added that his legacy would continue to inspire future generations of readers and thinkers.
Early Life And Background
SL Bhyrappa was born on August 20, 1931, in Santeshivara village in Karnataka’s Hassan district. He belonged to a Hoysala Karnataka Brahmin family. His childhood was filled with hardship as he lost his mother and brothers to the Bubonic plague. Despite these struggles, Bhyrappa continued his education with determination.
Academic Achievements
He completed his schooling in Channarayapatna and Mysore before pursuing higher education in philosophy. He obtained a BA (Hons) in Philosophy at Mysore University and later an MA in Philosophy. He went on to earn his doctorate in philosophy from Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda. His deep academic background shaped his intellectual and literary journey.
Literary Career And Contributions
According to his official website, Bhyrappa wrote 24 novels, four volumes of literary criticism, and several books on aesthetics, social issues, and culture.
