In a somber event in Leipzig, Germany, a vehicle attack on Monday resulted in the deaths of two individuals and left several others injured, as reported by local officials.
Mayor Burkhard Jung announced the unfortunate news, confirming that the incident also left three individuals in critical condition, highlighting it as a “mass casualty event.”
Law enforcement apprehended the driver, a 33-year-old German man, immediately after the incident. Authorities noted that he complied without resistance, alleviating current fears of public danger.
At a press conference, Jung lamented the event, labeling it a “horrific attack” and stating that mere words fall short of expressing the gravity of the situation.
Saxony's Prime Minister, Michael Kretschmer, indicated the possibility of the suspect having mental health challenges. Investigations are underway to uncover the specific reasons behind the attack.
Emergency services acted swiftly, initiating a significant operation in the vicinity. Numerous ambulances, police units, and rescue teams responded, leading to the temporary closure of adjoining thoroughfares.
Local reports mentioned that a damaged Volkswagen SUV sped through the pedestrian district during the incident.
Germany has experienced similar such incidents in recent times, where vehicles have been weaponized against pedestrians. Some cases are linked to ideological or religious motives, while others involve individuals grappling with mental health issues.
Investigations by local authorities are ongoing, with further updates anticipated soon.
