Lone Suspect Responsible for Fatal Taipei Attack, Police Confirm

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

The city of Taipei is in shock following a rare violent incident that resulted in four fatalities, including the attacker. Law enforcement officials have confirmed that the assailant acted independently, without any known accomplices.

The assault occurred on Friday evening in a bustling central area of Taipei, renowned for its shopping and public transportation. According to authorities, the 27-year-old suspect, identified as Chang Wen from Taoyuan, initiated the violence by deploying smoke grenades before wielding a knife against passersby. The chaos began near the central train station and progressed toward a nearby mall.

After carrying out the attack, Chang fled the scene, leading to a police chase which ended fatally when he fell from a building. This incident brought the death toll to four.

The Director-General of the National Police Agency, Chang Jung-hsin, informed the media that investigators have found no ties to any other individuals. “Investigations so far indicate that the suspect operated alone,” he stated. Police are currently probing into potential motives behind the assault.

Premier Cho Jung-tai disclosed that the assailant was already on the authorities' radar, with an arrest warrant for allegedly bypassing mandatory military service in Taiwan. Officials are investigating whether this circumstance contributed to his actions.

In total, 11 individuals sustained injuries during the attack, with two in critical condition in intensive care, while others receive treatment for stab wounds and smoke inhalation. Hospital representatives revealed that doctors are making every effort for the injured to recover.

Incidents of violent crime are exceedingly rare in Taiwan, which is celebrated for its robust public safety. Hence, this attack has stirred significant alarm and disbelief among residents, many of whom could not envision such an event occurring in a crowded public setting.

In light of this unfortunate event, police have stepped up security measures throughout Taipei and across the island. Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an announced enhanced patrols in shopping districts, transportation hubs, and other heavily populated areas, urging officers to remain vigilant and equipped.

On Saturday morning, President Lai Ching-te visited several of the injured victims in the hospital. He conveyed online that the government plans to thoroughly analyze the incident and enhance response mechanisms.

“We must learn from this tragedy and expedite our emergency responses,” the president emphasized, reaffirming that public safety is a paramount concern.

As the investigation unfolds, officials are encouraging the public to remain calm and assist law enforcement. While Taipei collectively mourns the victims, authorities assert that decisive actions are being taken to restore the safety of both residents and visitors.
