Italian tennis star Lorenzo Musetti faced trouble from the crowd during his fourth-round match at the Shanghai Masters on Wednesday, 9 October 2025. Some spectators were heard coughing repeatedly, which appeared to distract him during his serves.
This incident comes days after Musetti apologized for complaints about fans at the China Open in Beijing, where he criticized spectators for similar behavior.
Incident in Shanghai
During his match against Canadian player Felix Auger-Aliassime, the 23-year-old Musetti asked chair umpire Adel Nour to intervene.
“Come on, (it happens on) every point,” Musetti said after dropping a serve to go 2-5 down in the second set. “I understand a few times … I made a mistake, OK, but this is not possible every point. It's too much. Say something.”
Despite his frustration, Musetti lost the match 6-4, 6-2.
Background: Beijing Controversy
Musetti courted controversy last month during the China Open against Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. He complained that Chinese fans were “always coughing”, which drew criticism.
After the match, Musetti issued a public apology on Instagram:
"I would like to sincerely apologise for what I said in frustration during my match. My words were directed only at a few individuals in the crowd who were coughing repeatedly and disturbing the play. They were never, in any way, meant for the Chinese people. It happened in a moment of stress and tension, but still, this is no excuse at all."
This apology was an attempt to repair relations with fans and show respect for the local audience.
Fans and Player Relations
Musetti is not the only player to face criticism in China recently. American player Taylor Townsend also apologized after making negative comments about food served during the Billie Jean King Cup finals in Shenzhen.
These incidents highlight the challenges foreign athletes can face when playing in different cultural environments, where crowd behavior or local customs may be misinterpreted.
Musetti’s Professional Outlook
Despite the distractions, Musetti remains a top-ranked player and continues to compete at high levels. He is currently world number nine and has shown skill and determination on the court.
The Shanghai incident is a reminder that even experienced players can face unusual pressures from the audience. It also emphasizes the importance of respecting both fans and players during international sporting events.
