French President Emmanuel Macron arrived in Qatar on October 20, 2026, for a state visit aimed at strengthening strategic and economic relations between France and Qatar. The visit forms part of a wider Gulf tour focused on energy security, defence cooperation, investment and regional stability.

During the Gulf tour, France secured commitments for an additional 200,000 tonnes of diesel per month from the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, according to the French presidency. The commitments include approximately 100,000 tonnes per month from each country.
With the addition of commitments from Saudi Arabia, France's total pledged diesel supplies are expected to reach approximately 295,000 tonnes per month, according to the French presidency. This represents slightly more than 10 per cent of France's diesel consumption, helping the country diversify its sources of fuel.
During his state visit, Macron met Qatar's Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, to discuss strengthening bilateral relations. The discussions covered energy security, defence, investment, economic cooperation and regional stability. Both countries have an interest in maintaining strong diplomatic and commercial ties.
Disruptions to energy transport routes, including the Strait of Hormuz, have increased concerns about the reliability and cost of international fuel supplies. France is working with regional partners to diversify supply arrangements and reduce the impact of energy market pressures on households and businesses.
Macron's Gulf tour highlights the growing importance of cooperation between France and energy-producing countries in the Middle East. The additional diesel commitments and talks with Qatar underline France's efforts to strengthen energy security while expanding strategic and economic partnerships across the region.
