A heartbreaking incident occurred during the National-Level Fully Residential School Rugby 7s Tournament in Ipoh when a 16-year-old Form Four student from Johor collapsed and tragically passed away. The student, identified as Fauzan Sulaiman, fell ill just before the second half of the match began. Despite immediate medical attention, he could not be revived, leaving players, teachers, and spectators in deep sorrow.
Student Collapses During the Game
The incident took place around 10:30 am, moments before the second half was set to begin. Teachers accompanying Fauzan stated that he had shown no signs of illness or fatigue during the first half. According to Ipoh police chief Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad, the student suddenly collapsed near the sidelines and appeared to suffer from severe cramps followed by suspected seizures.
Immediate Medical Response
The medical officer on duty rushed to provide first aid after noticing the student’s distress. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was quickly performed when his pulse weakened. He was then transported to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. However, despite the rapid response, Fauzan was pronounced dead at 11:18 am, less than an hour after he collapsed.
Cause of Death Identified
Following a post-mortem examination, police confirmed that Fauzan suffered a torn psoas muscle — a major muscle that runs from the lower spine to the upper thigh — leading to internal bleeding and massive blood loss around the right hip. The condition is extremely rare and often difficult to detect before it causes serious complications.
Ministry Cancels Tournament
In response to the tragedy, the Ministry of Education announced the immediate cancellation of the ongoing rugby tournament. Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek expressed her deepest condolences to Fauzan’s family and explained that the event will be rescheduled for January 28 to 31 next year. She emphasized that all required safety protocols and medical measures were already in place during the match, describing the student’s death as an unforeseeable incident.
Nation Expresses Grief and Solidarity
Minister Fadhlina personally attended a yasin recital and tahlil prayers held in memory of Fauzan at Sekolah Tuanku Abdul Rahman. “The decision to cancel the matches was necessary to honor the student’s memory and stand with his family during this painful time,” she said. The education and sports communities across Malaysia have expressed grief over the young athlete’s sudden passing.
Calls for Enhanced Safety Measures
Authorities have urged schools and sports organizers nationwide to reassess safety measures and ensure medical personnel are well-prepared for any emergencies during competitive events. Experts highlighted that even well-trained young athletes may face unpredictable health complications during intense physical activity, making immediate access to medical support crucial.
This tragedy serves as a painful reminder of how unexpected medical emergencies can strike even healthy, active students. It underscores the importance of continuous monitoring of players’ health, availability of trained medical staff, and proper emergency protocols in all school sports tournaments.
