Maruti Suzuki India has crossed the 30 million mark in cumulative domestic car sales, reaffirming its position as the nation's largest carmaker. The company's journey began with the Maruti 800, first delivered on December 14, 1983, which launched its long-standing presence in the Indian market.
The pace of sales picked up markedly over time: it took 28 years and two months to reach the initial 10 million units, the following 10 million were achieved in 7 years and 5 months, and the latest 10 million came in a record 6 years and 4 months — a reflection of accelerating demand.
On a model level, the Alto remains the bestselling vehicle with over 47 lakh units sold, trailed by the Wagon R at around 34 lakh and the Swift with more than 32 lakh. Compact SUVs such as the Brezza and Fronx have also entered the top-ten list, signalling shifting consumer preferences toward SUVs.
Today Maruti Suzuki markets 19 models across more than 170 variants to serve a wide range of buyers. With car ownership still near 33 vehicles per 1,000 people, there is considerable headroom for further growth across urban and semi-urban regions.
This 30-million milestone highlights Maruti Suzuki's enduring market leadership and charts the broader evolution of India's automobile sector — from affordable entry-level cars to a varied mix that now includes compact SUVs and premium options.
