Sydney Shooting Injures 20, Gunman Taken into Custody

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

A man is in custody after allegedly firing between 50 and 100 bullets into a busy street in Sydney’s Inner West, wounding 20 people. Authorities have ruled out links to terrorism or gang activity. Police responded to emergency calls on Sunday evening after reports of random shooting at passing vehicles and pedestrians.

Witness Accounts Describe Chaos

Several witnesses described the scene as chaotic and frightening. Office worker Joe Azar said he initially thought the sounds were fireworks or rocks hitting windows. “Some guy's windshield blew up, then the bus stop glass shattered,” he told reporters. The rapid sequence of events left many in disbelief and shock. Another witness, Tadgh, said, “It was something out of a movie… bang, bang, bang, sparks and smoke everywhere.”

Police Response and Arrest

A large police contingent quickly swarmed the area, locking down the street. Officers entered a unit above a business and arrested a 60-year-old man, seizing two rifles from the scene. The suspect sustained injuries during the arrest and was taken to a hospital for treatment. Police confirmed no charges have yet been filed against the alleged shooter.

Casualties and Hospitalizations

One man self-presented at a hospital with a gunshot wound and remains in serious condition. Nineteen others were treated for injuries caused by shrapnel or shattered glass, with several hospitalized for further care. Authorities emphasized the seriousness of the incident, describing it as “terrifying” and unprecedented for the area.

Police Statement and Ongoing Investigation

New South Wales Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon stated that the motive behind the shooting remains unclear. He reassured the public that there are no known links to terrorism or gang-related activity. Investigators continue to examine the incident, interviewing witnesses and gathering evidence to determine what prompted the shooting.

Context of Mass Shootings in Australia

Mass shootings are relatively rare in Australia due to strict gun laws. A ban on automatic and semi-automatic weapons has been in place since 1996 after a lone gunman killed 35 people in the Port Arthur tragedy in Tasmania. Authorities continue to monitor similar threats, as seen in past incidents including the 2022 shooting near Wieambilla in Queensland.

Public Reaction and Safety Concerns

The shocking incident has left residents shaken, prompting discussions about urban safety and gun control measures. Local authorities have urged people to remain vigilant while the investigation continues. Emergency services remain on high alert to prevent further incidents and ensure public safety.
