Moldova Approves 60-Day Emergency
Moldova’s Parliament has approved a 60-day state of emergency covering the country’s energy and hydrological sectors. The measure will take effect on September 26, 2026, and is designed to give authorities additional powers to respond quickly if energy, fuel or water supplies face disruption.
Parliament Vote on Emergency Measures
The decision was approved by 54 lawmakers, while 20 voted against it. The measure was proposed by the government as a preventive step before the winter season, when demand for energy is expected to increase.

Drought Adds Pressure on Water Supplies
Moldova is facing a serious hydrological deficit, with low water levels affecting the Dniester and Prut river systems. The government has warned that continued low water levels could affect water collection and the supply of drinking water to the population.
Energy Supply Faces Winter Risks
The energy sector is also under pressure as Moldova prepares for colder weather. Moldova’s Energy Ministry says around 59 percent of the electricity needed during the coming winter is expected to be covered through imports, while peak demand could require 400 to 450 megawatts of imported electricity.
Government Gets Faster Response Powers
The emergency framework will allow authorities to take temporary measures when necessary to maintain energy and fuel supplies, protect households and critical infrastructure, and preserve access to water and electricity. Officials may also be able to accelerate purchases of equipment and deploy emergency systems if conditions worsen.
Energy and Water Risks Are Connected
Moldova’s government has highlighted the close relationship between the two sectors. Water pumping and treatment facilities depend on electricity, while drought can also reduce hydropower generation. Officials therefore consider simultaneous problems in energy and water supplies a risk that requires advance preparation.
Emergency Begins Before Winter
The 60-day emergency will begin on September 26 as Moldova enters the colder part of the year. Authorities say the measure is preventive and is intended to provide the tools needed to respond before potential shortages or interruptions become more serious.
