Montreal Victoire Claims PWHL Walter Cup Against Ottawa Charge

Post by : Shweta

Montreal made headlines by defeating Ottawa in a commanding performance, securing the Walter Cup championship. With a decisive 4-0 victory in the final game, Montreal concluded the series with a 3-1 win, becoming the first Canadian team to clinch the Professional Women’s Hockey League title. This historic win signifies a turning point for women’s hockey in Canada, breaking the title streak previously controlled by Minnesota teams.

Montreal entered the finals boasting one of the league's top records, finishing first in the regular season. The team maintained its excellent form throughout the playoffs, unleashing that energy during the Walter Cup Finals. Star forward Marie-Philip Poulin showcased crucial leadership during the championship journey, with several teammates stepping up in pivotal moments.

In the decisive match, forward Abby Roque netted two goals to spearhead Montreal’s offensive attack, while Swedish player Lina Ljungblom contributed an important goal to finalize the win. Montreal’s defense was equally impressive, keeping Ottawa scoreless throughout the duel. The team dominated possession and maintained pressure from the game's outset until the final horn.

The championship series was notable for multiple reasons: it marked the first all-Canadian final in PWHL history and the first title series without the previous champions. Additionally, both teams were guided by female head coaches—Kori Cheverie for Montreal and Carla MacLeod for Ottawa.

Despite their loss, Ottawa was commended for their playoff run, reaching the Walter Cup Finals for a second consecutive year after defeating Boston in the semifinals. The team displayed resilience throughout the playoffs and captured the attention of the hockey community this season. Goaltender Gwyneth Philips delivered remarkable performances and emerged as one of Ottawa's standout players.

Montreal’s victory in the Walter Cup is being hailed as a significant milestone for Canadian women’s hockey and the PWHL's growth. Celebrations erupted across Montreal following the win, with analysts noting the championship as evidence of the league's increasing appeal and promising future. This victory solidifies Montreal’s reputation as a top contender in professional women’s hockey and adds another exciting chapter to Canada’s illustrious hockey saga.
