Myanmar to Conduct Third Election Phase on January 25 Amidst Ongoing Turmoil

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

Myanmar is poised to undertake the third phase of its general elections on January 25, 2026, as reported by state media. This phase follows two others set for December 28, 2025, and January 11, 2026, which will cover 202 of the country's 330 townships. In total, 63 townships will be included in this upcoming phase, according to the Global New Light of Myanmar.

The elections are being organized against a backdrop of persistent civil conflict that has been ongoing since the military coup in 2021. Armed resistance groups have gained momentum, complicating efforts for a comprehensive nationwide vote. Experts assert that conducting elections under these conditions poses significant challenges and may not accurately represent the sentiments of the population.

Junta leader Min Aung Hlaing has asserted that these elections aim to create a stable government, while recognizing that not all regions will be able to participate due to safety issues. Official timelines for vote counting and result announcements remain unspecified.

The military claims that the election enjoys widespread support; however, analysts caution that the ongoing unrest and security threats could affect voter turnout and the integrity of the electoral process.

This third phase is deemed crucial by Myanmar’s military administration as it seeks to transition from military governance to a more recognized political framework. The environment remains uncertain, and both the public and international observers are keenly monitoring the unfolding election process.

The results from this phase could shed light on Myanmar's political trajectory and the potential for stability amid ongoing unrest.
